Grounded
And I understood and saw that God had not sent him, but he had pronounced the prophecy against me because
Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. For this purpose he was hired, that I should be afraid and act in this way
and sin, and so they could give me a bad name in order to taunt me.
Nehemiah 6:12-13 ESV
Grounded, rooted, established—words that accurately describe Nehemiah. He understood his purpose, and he
recognized his opposition. Do we?
In Paul’s letter to the Colossians, he admonishes them to be “rooted and built up in Him and established in the
faith” (Colossians 2:7). Deceptive teachers ran rampant in the region, and what they proclaimed sounded close
enough to the truth to be believable. Paul realized without proper roots, followers of Christ could easily be
swayed.
So can you. So can I.
How do we ground ourselves when it relates to our passion? How do we handle opposition that comes our way?
First, the Bible, the primary defense against opposition, which Paul calls the “sword of the Spirit.” Learn to
wield this weapon well. Daily sharpen the blade by reading and studying the Scriptures. This is our home base.
Let’s run here first.
Secondly, the journal started at the beginning of this journey. Prayers and preparation, support and strategy, and
whispers from the Holy Spirit all written in one place.
When opposition comes, we must ask ourselves:
How does this event or thought line up with what the Lord tells me in His Word?
Who is the behind the challenges? God or the Enemy?
And when the age-old question comes, “Did God actually say . . .?”
We need to refer to both the Word and our journal.
Read Ephesians 6:10-18. What are the items of warfare listed in this passage? What is the purpose of each one?
