Over the Summer, we’ve been attending a study on Grace at our church. And after 7 weeks so far, Grace is still something that is really hard to wrap my head around. I really like the way our Pastor defined Grace…receiving what we don’t deserve. One of the examples he has used that stuck out for me, is that if we asked God for just a crumb and He invited us to sit down at the table and join Him for a feast, that would be Grace.
I think one of the reasons the concept of Grace is so hard to grasp, is because there are no strings attached. In today’s world, we’re always bombarded with the reminder, that nothing is free. Usually if someone gives us something, we feel the need to return the favor…whether it’s because we feel like they have an ulterior motive and expect something in return or because we don’t want to feel indebted to someone.
Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” It doesn’t get any better than receiving a gift from God! He wants us to accept His Grace, with no strings attached, and in return share that Grace with those around us. Because if we have received His Grace, how can we not show it to others.
